Well, the vegetable crops aren't doing a whole lot right now, but the pig crop is looking good. Our first spring litter arrived yesterday.
I made a short video, but it is basically inaudible (I was trying not to disrupt the girl nursing) so I'll paraphrase.
This gilt, known as Geez, is the first daughter of Dottie, our herd gilt producer, to have pigs. She had 11 nice piglets and is off to a great start as a mother. We target 11 as the number we want born, so she's definitely a keeper if she can milk anywhere close to her mom. Geez's sister, Myfoot, is looking like she'll have piglets tonight.
The girls have nests side by side in one of the two-stall arks we built, and they each chose a nest on their own, in other words, we didn't have to block one of them in to keep them from sharing the same nest. That's always a good sign of mothering ability, so I think we're on to something with Dottie as our herd gilt producer. Dottie's second batch of daughters are around the 180 pound mark, and they'll be eligible to breed in a couple of months. The video is short and sweet:
We'll get more video up after Myfoot has her litter. Thanks for reading!
Note: If the names Geez and Myfoot seem odd, well, you'll just have to come down and feed them sometime!
