For those of you that have enjoyed our Pork & Greens products, or anyone interested in raising some pigs for themselves, we want to give you a little background on what makes our pork unique. There are two main differences between what you would buy at the grocery store versus what you buy from our farm. First, most grocery store pork comes from pigs raised in confinement buildings. These facilities allow mass production of pork, but with quite a cost in terms of the welfare and health of the animals. Antibiotic use, either injected, mixed in the feed, or delivered through the watering system, is a constant, everyday program on almost all confinement systems. Welfare of the animals, due to being confined in cages or small pens and living on hard (concrete or wire) surfaces, is abysmal. In contrast, our pigs live in a natural environment. They receive NO antibiotics and have no health or structural problems associated with confined pigs. The second thing that seperates our pork from grocery store brands is the breeds of pigs we use. In the following video, we hope you get a basic understanding of what breeds we use and why we use the:
It was a bit windy (better the weather than the commentator! ) so we want to apologize for sound issues. Also, if the video seems to end abruptly, I have to place blame squarely on the pigs, as they seemed a little disturbed. Every time I yelled "cut, cut" they must have thought I was yelling "hut, hut" and, well, (we all know what footballs are made of) they scattered to the four winds! Boooo Haa Haa! Thanks for reading and/or watching, and hopefully next week we'll have some little piglets on the ground. As always, comments, questions, or suggestions are always welcome. Don't forget to bookmark or favorite us! We'll see you next week or as soon as the piglets arrive.
